The Latest Apple MacBook Pro Review: Is It Worth The Upgrade?

The new MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 is Apple’s greatest notebook to date.

The Pro is a must-have for anybody who relies on their laptop to speed through hard computer chores, thanks to its fantastic display, great performance, and excellent battery life. Of course, this level of performance comes at a premium cost, with prices beginning at $2499. For those who can afford it, the MacBook Pro provides a glimpse into a new type of computing experience.

I’ve been using Apple portable computers since the Powerbook 100 debuted in 1991. After spending several weeks using the new MacBook Pro, I’ve concluded that it combines the responsiveness formerly associated with only iPads and iPhones with the polished form factor of Apple’s greatest computers.

In some ways, the Pro may be considered a step back. For starters, the MacBook Pro is larger and heavier than the model it replaces, measuring 0.66 by 14 by 9.8 inches and weighing 4.8 pounds. This is not a laptop you’ll forget you’re carrying around in your bag. The heaviness of the new MacBook, on the other hand, is comforting and in line with its target demographic of professionals.

Apple has also gone full circle, replacing the ports that were deleted in prior MacBook versions. A MagSafe connector, headphone jack, SD card slot, HDMI port, and three Thunderbolt 4 ports are included, which should be plenty for practically any user. There is no USB-A port, although most people will not notice.

Precision is crucial when it comes to the keyboard.

When you start typing on the keyboard, the delight of using the MacBook Pro becomes clear. It has a scissor key mechanism that feels accurate and provides good feedback.
The keyboard on the Pro is one of the finest I’ve ever used on a laptop. If I were to be fussy, I’d say the key resistance is a touch too strong, which might cause finger fatigue during long typing sessions.

Another spot where Apple has chosen to regress is just above the keyboard. The Touch Bar, a strip that offers touch access to software features, has been dropped by the firm. As someone who used the Touch Bar for a number of years and never found it useful.

The trackpad is big and bold.

There’s nothing not to appreciate about the new MacBook Pro’s trackpad. It’s huge and responsive, and after a time you won’t notice it, which is all you need in an input device.

The trackpad on the new MacBook works flawlessly, which is more than you can say for the trackpad on most Windows computers. When I was spending hours revising documents, I had no issue moving the pointer around the screen precisely.

Luminous and lovely display

The Pro has the finest display I’ve ever seen on a computer, which may be enough to convince you to buy it. It breathes quality.
Some users may dislike to the notch cut out at the top of the display to accommodate a camera. However, after using the Pro for a few hours, I didn’t even feel the difference.

The display has Mini-LED technology, which allows it to switch off in portions, resulting in deeper black depths than normal LED displays. You also get ProMotion, which implies a high refresh rate for a smoother look when you move the mouse.

Along with the stunning display, the Pro comes with a freshly redesigned pair of speakers. In a nutshell, the speakers are fantastic. They have four woofers that produce enough bass to make most songs seem vibrant. Movies sound nearly as well as they do in the theatre.

Text appears fantastic on the Pro, and I found myself staring at Word pages just to enjoy how clear and distinct the words are. Video playback was also amazing, with the Mini-LED screen displaying a degree of quality that made me want to replay my favourite movies. The anti-glare coating is also highly effective, even while using the Pro in full sunshine.

Performance: Fast but not overheated.

The MacBook Pro is powered by Apple’s cutting-edge M1 processor, which has been powering several of the company’s other computers for the last year.

The new chip is the deciding factor. I never considered my old MacBook Pro from 2019 to be slow until I started using the new model, and now I can’t use any other computer without thinking about how slow it is.

On the Pro, apps launch almost instantaneously. I have a bad habit of working with too many browser tabs open. Even with dozens of tabs open in both the Chrome and Safari web browsers, the Pro remained responsive.

For those interested in the specifics, the PCMark benchmarking programme discovered the following ratings for the MacBook Pro:

1749 for a single core

11542 Multi-Core

In contrast, the following are the findings of the same testing programme on the MacBook Pro 13-inch (M1):

1720 for a single core

7552 Multi-Core

Battery: It just keeps going and going.

The new M1 chip’s efficiency is one of its advantages. Despite its strength, the chip consumes energy. The M1 Pro’s battery lasted 16 hours on constant usage, making it the longest-lasting laptop I’ve ever used.

All of this battery life has a big practical benefit. Essentially, you don’t need to pack a charger, even if you’re working a whole day. It’s freeing not to have to worry about juice.

Another advantage of the efficient M1 processor is that the MacBook runs cool. I’ve used it for dozens of hours and it’s never gotten more than a little warm. In comparison, my 2019 MacBook Pro used to become so hot that I was afraid it might catch fire.

Price: Wheezing, steaming?

The MacBook Pro’s exorbitant price tag is a major deterrent for most potential buyers. I’ve been using the entry-level model, which costs $2499. For that amount, you get a 10-core CPU, a 16-core GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of SSD storage.

To put that in context, the superb MacBook Air, which also features an M1 processor, costs $999. At that price, the Air comes with an 8-core CPU, a 7-core GPU, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage.

I use my MacBook for vital activities for hours every day, therefore paying a lot doesn’t bother me. I want to maintain the new Pro model for several years to ensure that I have a somewhat futureproof configuration.

The Final Word

A colossally powerful laptop.

As one of the most recent and costly laptops on the market, it’s no surprise that I rate the MacBook Pro highly in practise. This laptop is ideal for practically any application due to its lightning-fast performance, excellent screen, and all-day and then some battery life. The design, on the other hand, goes back to basics, and road warriors may wish to explore a lighter, less bulky model. However, if you rely on your MacBook for hard jobs, this is a must-have.
